Gyms across the country are closing temporarily due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Just because gyms are closing, however, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be physically active and simply eat all the quarantine food you have gathered, effectively losing all the handwork you put into your health. The good news is you can be just as physically active at home, which is the safest option now. You might also be sharing a home gym with others in your home, so it’s still important to practice good. You can find some tips for keeping your home gym clean below.

Wipe Down Equipment Regularly

A great benefit to working out at home is that you don’t have hundreds of people coming in and out every day. However, just because your home gym doesn’t have various people utilizing it, that doesn’t mean you can get away with not cleaning your equipment. An easy tip for keeping your home gym clean is to use disinfecting wipes before and after you use any equipment that you touch. This will ensure that you wipe out as many germs as possible. Be sure to wipe down dumbbells, yoga mats, barbells, jump rope, and anything else you utilize. Making this a habit is a great way to remain clean.

Clean the Floors

It's also important to clean your home gym’s floor. Whether it’s carpet, hardwood, or rubber tiles, you still want to maintain it. Each type of flooring will demand its own unique maintenance. If you have carpet, you should obviously be vacuuming at least once a week. For rubber tiles and hardwood, a great method is to mop with warm water, dish soap, and vinegar. It’s also worth noting that you should clean your gym top to bottom.

Use Air Fresheners

Gyms are also known for getting rather stinky, which is why you should also get air fresheners. A quality air freshener can eliminate any bad odor that might be in the air after a tough workout. You should also consider de-humidifying the room.

Add a Fan

Another way to get rid of the bad smell that might be taking over your home gym is to get some air circulation going. If you can’t open any windows or doors, we suggest that you add a fan to your gym, which will not only help eliminate the odor, but it will also keep things comfortable and cool as you work out. As far as what kind of fan you should get, an overhead fan is a great option, but you can also just pick up a standing fan at the store.

Wear Clean Shoes

A common mistake people make when they workout at home is that they tend to use the same shoes they wear outside into their gym. If you do this, you risk getting dirt, mud, and other debris inside your home. Instead, what you should do is have a spare pair of shoes that are designated for your workouts; or, don’t wear any shoes at all. This will not only keep your gym shoes in good condition, but your home gym will stay cleaner this way too.

Use Clean Towels

Towels also help people remain hygienic in the gym. The thing about using towels is you must make sure that they are clean. So, don’t forget to wash your towels and have a place for old ones in your home gym for when you are done using them. It’s also handy to have a space in your home gym where you can have clean towels and disinfectant wipes for whenever you need to freshen up the space.

Wear Clean Clothes

Don’t forget about wearing clean clothes when you work out, either. As we work out, we tend to sweat, and this sweat gets all over our clothes. Dirty clothes can then get your gym equipment dirty, creating a cyclical problem. To be as hygienic as possible, simply wear clean clothes.

Dust Regularly

There is another thing you need to take into consideration to keep your gym as clean as possible. Many people don’t think about all the dust in your gym, but it can easily go unnoticed and start to collect all over your gym equipment. Dust in a gym is not good to breathe in, especially for those who suffer from asthma or allergies. Every so often, use a soft cloth to wipe off any dust on equipment, fans, or cords.

Get a Garbage Can

Because you will be using disinfecting wipes frequently, you need to have a place where you can dispose of them when you are finished. That’s why you also need to add a garbage can for your home gym. This will prevent you or anybody else from simply throwing used wipes on the floor. When you are deciding on a garbage can for your home gym, consider getting one that has a top that can close, so any germs remain contained and don’t escape into your gym.

Wash Your Hands

Our final tip is a no brainer, yet some people still need reminding, even in these tough times. Make sure you wash our hands before and after you work out. Use warm water, soap, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. As you wash your hands, make sure you are really scrubbing your fingers too, since you may touch your face with them. It’s also not a bad idea to have a hand sanitizer bottle hand in your home gym as well.

Given the serious circumstances happening at the moment, you might be thinking about building a home gym in a spare room, basement, or garage. Precor is a brand you might have noticed at your local gym, but they also offer plenty of equipment that you can use in your home. Precor also has one of the top home fitness stores in the country, with a diverse selection of equipment to peruse. You can find treadmills, ellipticals, strength machines, accessories, climbers, exercise bikes, and more. During these stressful times, it’s important that you remain heathly, and there’s no better way to boost your immune system than by remaining physically active.
