When you do HIIT training, you unlock what is known as the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) effect, which will allow you to burn calories during and after the workout. This effect occurs when you perform a HIIT workout because your body uses energy reserves and metabolism remains high after you put in the hard work. You also burn calories afterward because your body is replacing energy and repairing the muscles that you damaged during the workout.

Ability To Pump More Blood

Another reason that interval training is effective is that it allows the heart to pump more blood. This is known as stroke volume, and when you exercise, it typically increases. However, interval training can increase stroke volume even more so than a typical workout.

Increased Rate of Free Radicals

Past research also points to an increased rate of free radicals during HIIT workouts. This occurs when calcium changes in the cells that break down during intense exercises like HIIT training, which allows for the more efficient production of energy and many free radicals entering calcium channels. Free radicals also increase during regular workouts, but HIIT training has shown an even bigger increase.

Metabolic Waste Production

Another scientific reason that might help you understand why interval training works relates to metabolic waste. HIIT workouts can produce results is a short amount of time, and one of the reasons is that it produces and flushes out a large amount of metabolic waste. When you institute an active resting period, it allows your body to adjust to the HIIT workouts and recover from them quickly by removing waste products involved with the muscles you are using.
