Barre has been increasing in popularity in recent years. It’s a fitness and exercise class that combines elements of ballet, pilates, strength training and even a bit of yoga. Due to its sculpting abilities—the class focuses on mainly the core, legs, and glutes—women of all ages love the effectiveness and enjoyable nature of barre.

Finding an exercise you love is the key to sticking to it. Unfortunately only half of adults over the age of 18 met the CDC’s aerobic activity requirement, which means the other half is most likely living an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle.

Many attribute their unhealthy lifestyle to their limited free time. However, no matter what your schedule is, you can always make time while at home. If you’re interested in learning how you can take advantage of making your own barre routine and studio at home, keep reading.

The exercise basics

If you want to familiarize yourself with this form of exercise, take a couple of classes at your local gym or barre studio. A one week trial is typically free or low cost.

However, if you don’t have access to a barre studio, create your own plan by mixing up some of these exercises.

  • Ballet jumps
  • Front leg extension
  • Side leg extensions
  • Ronde jambe
  • Plie in first and second position
  • Arabesque

If creating your own routine sounds daunting, you can always search for a routine online or follow a YouTube video.

Home fitness equipment you’ll need

You will need a few pieces of equipment to put your barre home gym together. Though barre uses a ballet bar, you can substitute this with a chair or utility gym bench. Anything that will give you the support you need. You will also need a set of dumbbells ranging from five to ten pounds. Barre utilizes light weight and high repetitions, so keep this in mind based on your strength and abilities. Lastly, purchase a mirror so you can check your form throughout the entire workout.
