For active individuals sleep is one of the most important training tools available. More commonly than not, athletic individuals focus on their rigorous schedules and strict diets - too often do we forget to factor in adequate sleep to improve our training, recovery, performance and overall well-being.
The adult body needs an average of 7-9 hours of sleep each night, the average adult reports only 5-7 hours per night - whereas professional athletes will sleep an average of 10-12 hours per night! Regardless of the specific physical activity you take part in, efficient sleep will increase your overall accuracy, reaction times and performance longevity. It is one thing to advocate for better sleep and it is another to actually receive (make time for) this precious rest. If you face discomforts in the bedroom, try to control the aspects that are within your power:
-Limit distractions including noise and abrasive lighting.
-Create regular bedtime patterns and routines.
-Take a look at your nighttime essentials, comfortable bedding, supportive pillows and well-made mattresses (hybrid foam construction) play a large role in your ability to optimize your sleep and get right back to your workout tomorrow!
