Food plays a major role in our fitness, but you must be careful because there is a lot of false advertising out there. Some foods that claim to be healthy can actually be just as harmful as the foods you are trying to escape. Learn about the health foods that aren't actually good for you below.
While juices or smoothies can be full of healthy nutrients, antioxidants, and minerals, they can also be deceiving. The main reasons are that juice and smoothies contain a lot of sugar, and juicing removes all the fiber from fruits and vegetables that make you full. To avoid having too much sugar in your smoothie, it’s best to make sure you use more vegetables than fruit.
When it comes to drinks that have a lot of sugar in them, the same can be said for sports drinks. Many sports drinks are sold under the guise that they help athletes improve their performance. A much better alternative would be to stay hydrated by drinking water, but if you are looking for a sports drink that won’t be harmful, pay attention to the ingredients and look for drinks with electrolytes, caffeine, alkaline water, and hydrogen.
Protein bars can be a great way to increase your protein intake when building muscle mass, and they even come in some delicious flavors, but some are essentially candy bars loaded with sugar. The key to finding a healthy protein bar is to look for one that comes with plenty of protein, less than 13 grams of sugar, at least 3 grams of fiber, and not too many overall calories.
Many people make the mistake of passing on some snacks because they simply have a gluten-free label. However, gluten-free snacks make the list of health foods that aren’t actually good for you because gluten is not as bad as it has been made out to be unless you are allergic to it. So, eating gluten-free cookies and other junk food doesn’t make it healthier because many of these products are still highly processed, so there’s no need to suffer through their bland taste.
By no means are veggie chips an alternative to making sure you get enough nutrients every day. In reality, most veggie chips are just potato chips that use veggie-flavored power to make it seem like you are eating healthier. Veggie chips also usually contain a lot of sodium, carbs, and calories. Your best bet is to stay away from veggie chips and stick with the real thing instead.
